Well, to understand how the name came into existance, you need to know a
little bit of Wheathampstead Scouting history.....
It seems that some time in the seventies
there was a bit of an accident at the old scout hut and on November the
5th the old hut burnt down. Amazingly the only thing left in tact was
the newspapers that had been collected and stored for recycling.
A couple of years later the then Scout
leader - Mr Playle - Grandfather of Stephen who is in the group now -
decided to run a competition to name the new hut which had now been
built to replace the old one. (Presumably purchased with the proceeds of
the sale of only slightly charred newspapers?)
The winning suggestion came from a young scout who suggested WHEATSAC,
an acronym which could double as both Wheathampstead Scout Activity
Centre and Wheathampstead Scouts And Cubs.
The prize for the scout who suggested the name was apparently a small
box of Quality Street.
Amazing what some people will
do for a box of chocolates!
